A simple almost step by step of how I go about colouring in photoshop.

hope this can be helpful to someone.

(there really is only those four main steps lol.)

download for full view.

PSD file can be downloaded here [link] which can be used to break it down further.

P.S. I use a mouse now. I don't have a tablet anymore. I broke mine lol

Edit:

what I meant in step one is that I coloured the whole character in a SINGLE solid colour first, being brown this time and then locked the transparency, which is the little checkered icon in the layer window just above the top layer and below the blending options drop down menu. I then added the flats on top of the brown (same layer as brown layer). the reason for this is so that there are no gaps between colours.

nothing just scanned straight in and adjusting the levels to clean it up a bit.

how ever with this I didn't draw it, but you can usually tell if its pencil or digital and it was done in pencil and scanned straight in.

I don't go over the lines with pencil/brush/pen tool any more. takes too much time.

looks digital to me. pencil lines seem to look a bit more scratch and less smooth. he would've drawn it traditionally and possibly used a wacom to go over the lines in photoshop

awesome pic. if you adjust the level you can get rid of most of the light grey markings on it. and then I guess go in with an eraser. very tedious I guess. Another method is tracing over that image going over it nicely on a fresh piece of paper as clean as you can.

So did you cel shade this with a combination of the lasso and pen tool? I just got into cel shading so i'm curious as to how you went about it.

I did it using the polygon lasso tool only. pen tool and normal lasso tool are probably easier and faster though. I zoom in close so I can it on the lines.

it took me a long long time to colour this way. at first all tuts I read were just blabber lol. I just kept at it and continued to learn by experimenting and what not.

If you have any questions about the tutorial/walk-through/step-by-step feel free to ask.

it's another reason to why I added the PSD with it because it makes it easier to understand when you can view the file.

ohh and for step 1 what I meant was I coloured the Whole character in a solid colour being brown this time and then locked the transparency and then added the flats on top of the brown. the reason for this is so that there are no gaps between colours.
